1. The Science Behind the Magic
To understand how Kybella works, we need to learn what it actually is!
Kybella was born out of the medical use of fat-dissolving chemicals. In the 1950s and 60s, European scientists and physicians were using chemical compounds to break up fat for medical reasons. Once these chemical compounds were identified for breaking down and dissolving fat, cosmetic experts started looking to use the compounds for aesthetic reasons.
Fast forward to the new millennium, and researchers found that the true fat-dissolving acid was actually deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring acid found in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. Researchers and scientists found that they could create a synthetic clone of this acid to inject into areas of the body with submental fat, and thus, Kybella was born!
2. Benefits of Kybella
In 2015 Kybella was FDA-approved to dissolve submental fat under the chin (AKA The Double Chin). Submental body fat is stubborn body fat that is near impossible to remove even if you work out and live a healthy lifestyle.
Kybella is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that administers synthetic acid through a series of injections. It is a prescription medication injected that can only be administered by a licensed medical professional. The only other way to remove fat like this would be with a surgical procedure called liposuction. Liposuction is the procedure in which fat is removed through a suctioning tube. If you receive liposuction, you’ll be put under anesthesia and have a more extended recovery period and downtime after the procedure.
The great thing about Kybella is that there is no need for anesthesia, and there is no surgery involved in the treatment.
The main benefit of this treatment is that it leads to permanent dissolving and removal of the double chin. Researchers and medical professionals are also working to see how it removes fat in other small areas of the body. You may be thinking, “Why can’t I use it on my stomach?” Here is the simple answer – It would not be effective.
3. The Treatment Process
Adding to the benefits of this incredible treatment is that the process only takes about 30 minutes to perform!
When you go in for the procedure, you will be given either a numbing solution or ice to ease the discomfort.
If you haven’t already taken your makeup off, you will be asked to cleanse your face, or your medical professional may do it for you. This keeps the injection site clean and free of any chance of infection from outside factors.
When the treatment begins, your aesthetic professional will administer about 20-30 injections into the area. This may be more or less depending on the amount of submental fat you are looking to dissolve. You may experience some slight stinging or discomfort during the treatment, but other than that, it is a relatively painless procedure.
The entire treatment takes between 15-30 minutes to complete.
4. Permanent Results
The results of Kybella are permanent, which means, once you have completed your treatment plan, you can enjoy the long-lasting benefits of a slimmer and more contoured jawline!
According to research and the results of others who have had this treatment, you will need an average of 6 treatments to get the intended results. Your procedures will be scheduled about a month to 6 weeks apart to allow time for healing.
5. Healing and Recovery
After the procedure, you will be able to return to normal daily activities. You will experience swelling and redness and slight bruising in the area, but that is normal. The swelling may last for a few weeks, but that means the treatment is working. First, the acid injections work to dissolve the fat, and then the body works to flush everything out of the body through the lymphatic system.
Once the swelling is gone, you will start to see the results of the treatment. Patients who have received Kybella note that they start seeing more drastic results after the second round of injections.
