Let’s Talk About Chemical Peels!

Chemical Peels treatment | Resurgence Wellness in Arlington, TX

The name sounds more like a science experiment than a facial treatment, right? Well, don’t let the title keep you from experiencing the incredible benefits of chemical peels.

Here at Resurgence Wellness, we want our clients to be fully informed of the variety of treatments we offer here at our spa. We love being able to prove knowledge and understanding of the services we offer to give our clients clarity and a sense of our skincare treatments.

In our last article, “IPL/BBL Photofacials: Are they right for you?” We broke down the science and benefits of the revolutionary procedure.

In today’s article, we are talking about all things chemical peels.

Fun Fact: Did you know that chemical peels are the 3rd most common aesthetic treatment in the US behind Botox and Fillers?

Aesthetics & Science

When you pair the love of skincare and the knowledge of science, you can create a world of difference for people struggling with skincare issues like scarring, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, and many more.

Chemical peels were created to help remove the top layers of the skin to regenerate and grow healthy, unblemished skin on the face, neck, and hands.

Should I Get One?

You should ALWAYS consult your aesthetics professional before any facials or skin-related treatments. This ensures that you receive the proper treatment for your skin type, avoid injury or damage to the treatment area, and get the most bang for your buck with a treatment that provides maximum results for YOU.

Chemical peels aren’t like any other facials or skin treatments.

Chemical peels involve different formulas and can penetrate the skin at different depths so it is important that your aesthetics professional analyze your current skin conditions and imperfections to decide which treatment is best for you. They will use the Fitzpatrick Scale (Read about it here!) to help determine the right level of peel for you. In doing so, you’ll be able to enjoy the maximum benefits for YOUR type of skin and the conditions you’ve been experiencing.

3 Types of Peels

Each category uses varying acid solutions at different levels of strength to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin.

Light

This peel is the lightest form of chemical peel you can receive.

This helps to exfoliate and remove the outermost layer of the skin. Alpha-hydroxy acids such as salicylic, malic, glycolic, kojic, and lactic acids are the most common solutions used with this type of peel. The acids can be used alone or in combination with one another.

The main goals of this treatment are to help

  • Balance and improve skin tone
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles,
  • Treat acne and dry skin.

This peel has little to no downtime, and you’ll start to heal within a few hours up to a few days, depending on the size of the area that was treated.

This is the ONLY chemical peel that you can get every few weeks for skincare maintenance and rejuvenation.

If you’re looking for a healthy and balanced glow – this is an excellent treatment for you!

Medium

If you’re looking for a smooth, replenished, and fresh look, this is the kind of peel you want to get! During this treatment, the outermost layer (epidermis) and the upper part of the middle layers (dermis) are exfoliated and treated.

Acid solutions used in this are more potent than the light peels and include a higher concentration of glycolic, lactic, salicylic, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

This treatment is excellent for those who have rough skin, fine-to-moderate wrinkles, acne scarring, and age spots.

Recovery time for this peel takes about a week or more and might require some downtime due to redness, swelling, and tenderness on the treated area.

If you’re looking into this type of medium-depth peel, we recommend trying the revolutionary VI Peel.  It is the latest in chemical peel treatments and is being touted as the best chemical peel for all skin types.  It combines multiple acidic solutions as well as Vitamin C, and Benzoyl Peroxide, Hydrocortisone, and Hydroquinone.

It is gentle as it exfoliates the skin, stimulates collagen production, soothes inflammation and helps to improve skin texture, decreases signs of aging, and helps to correct pigment issues. The other advantage to a VI Peel is that it has less downtime compared to a traditional medium depth peel.

Deep

If acne scars have damaged your skin, if you suffer from deep wrinkles in the skin or discoloration you will want to discuss a deep chemical peel with an aesthetic professional.  This treatment can also help with pre-cancerous growths.

This peel uses the strongest chemical solution called phenol to penetrate the levels of dermal layers that the light and medium peels can’t reach.

You will need to pre-treat your skin with a prescription retinoid medication to prep your skin for the treatment and help aid in the healing process.

This treatment requires the most downtime, and you will most likely be recovering for 2 weeks before returning to your normal daily activities.

One deep chemical peel can last up to 10 years!

What Happens During Treatment?

When you receive a chemical peel, your aesthetics professional will apply a type of acid-based chemical solution to a controlled area of the skin to start the skin exfoliation process.

The professional will cleanse your skin, and gauze or glasses will be placed over your eyes for protection.  Depending on the level of peel you are receiving, you may be sedated or numbed to keep you comfortable.

The treatments last between 15 to 30 minutes. If you receive a deeper peel, you will receive the treatment in 15-minute increments to allow your skin to rest.

After The Treatment- What To Expect.

Now that you’ve gotten your chemical peel, you will experience what feels like mild sunburn, redness, swelling, and peeling.

You will need to avoid direct sunlight for up to 14 days and wear an SPF-based moisturizer.

You might be given sedatives or prescription medication to help ease any discomfort you might be feeling during the healing process.

You’ll follow up with your aesthetic professional and discuss any issues or pain you have after treatment.
